Recreation Internships (including Therapuetic Recreation)

The Kostopulos Dream Foundation offers three different internship tracks:

Spring (January – April)

Summer (May – August)

Fall (September – December)

We begin accepting applications six months prior to the beginning of the internship. Selection for interviews is made as soon as a formal application has been made and reviewed.

1. Resume 2. Transcripts (up-to-date, does not need to be official copy) 3. List of Personal Goals and Objectives to be achieved during internship 4. Two Letters of Recommendation or three references with contact information 5. Internship Requirements by the University and University Supervisor approval signature

When this information is received, the agency intern supervisor arranges an interview. The intern's responsibilities, school schedule, and specific start and finish dates are discussed in detail.

Applications should be sent in as soon as possible to be reviewed.

The internship consists of 12-15 consecutive weeks. Initially, there is an orientation period of approximately one week. The intern will then have experience working with programming, developing, and leading activities. The intern will have the opportunity to work with various populations such as the mentally challenged, physically challenged, emotionally challenged, and other special medical needs. Summer interns will plan and facilitate various camp activities. Fall and Winter interns will work with our community-based programs. They also will be involved with winter mini-camps and our Leadership Challenge Ropes Course Program offered to corporations, families and mental health agencies.

Job Summary: Interns will assess participants’ skill/ability level as well as plan, implement, and evaluate programs serving people with disabilities. Interns will assist with any special events and outreach programs for the Kostopulos Dream Foundation. Interns will complete a major project for the agency.

Qualifications: 1. Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record. Experience driving a 15-passenger van is helpful. 2. Must have a clean criminal background. 3. Current first aid/CPR certifications. 4. Ability to lift, transfer and provide physical assistance for participants. 5. Experience working with people with disabilities is preferred. Responsibilities: 1. Assessments of participants include: reviewing documentation, personal interview and observation. (Formal written assessments will be completed by TR interns). 2. Develop individualized intervention plans for participants. (TR intern only) 3. Planning programs/activities that include: writing goals and objectives, writing activity plans and making necessary arrangements. 4. Facilitate activities under direction of intern supervisor. 5. Complete evaluation forms for each activity. 6. Actively participate in staff meetings, planning sessions and in-service trainings. 7. Represent the agency by participating in outreach, advocacy and public relations. 8. Complete a major project for the agency as agreed upon by student, university and agency supervisor. Schedule: Interns will work a 40-hour week. Hours will vary from morning, afternoon, and evening. Some Saturdays may be required. Housing: Room and board is provided for interns, although it is not required for interns to live on site. Stipend: Interns will receive a stipend upon completion of their internship. Interns living on site will receive a stipend of $375.00. Interns not living on site will receive a stipend of $400.00. Possible internship focus areas (major projects) -Volunteer Program: supervise/train volunteers, recruit volunteers, update database and organize daily operations of program under the direction of the program director and volunteer coordinator. -New Program: conduct a needs assessment, plan and implement a new program under the supervision of the program director. -Grant Writing: research new grant opportunities, write grant under the direction of the program director and development director. -Outcome Measurement: assist in program outcome measurements, designing evaluations and other measurement tools, collect data and report findings. -Outreach: implement agency plan for marketing and recruiting new participants.
