Leisure Education Programs

This programs offers a variety of recreation and leisure experiences for people of all ages and abilities.

Family Enrichment Mini-Camps

Our Family Enrichment Mini-Camps are designed to provide families with a special needs child the opportunity to vacation together in a safe, fun-filled, enriching environment that promotes family togetherness, understanding, and unity. This program runs from Friday evenings to Saturday afternoons and your housing and meals are included. Activities may include: horseback riding, arts & crafts, fishing, canoeing, swimming, basketball, volleyball, and our low &high ropes course.

K-Kid Adventures, After-School Program offers recreation and experiential learning for children ages 7-12 with special needs. The goal for the K-Kids Program is to provide activities to develop functional life skills, increase leisure awareness, and reduce barriers to recreation participation. The program is offered two times a year for a 13 week session (September to December or January to April). Activities are held once a week on the short school day, Friday. The program includes outings in the community as well as activities at the camp facilities. Activities may include swimming, bowling, museum tours, musical concerts, horseback riding, arts and crafts, initiative games, ropes course activities, and more. Transportation is provided to and from the school, if three kids sign up from the same school. Other arrangements can be made if less than three kids attend.

Teen Quest is an exciting program for teens ages 13-17 with special needs. This program provides teenagers with an opportunity, at least once a week, to socialize with their peers, while addressing their individual needs. Activities typically occur on Friday evenings and include dances, movie nights, sporting events, snowshoeing/skiing, horseback riding, arts and crafts, and more. The program is designed to assists teens in developing self-efficacy, leisure skills, independence, and interpersonal relationships as they learn about themselves, others, and the world around them.

Adult Social Club allows adults with special needs, ages 18 and up, to expand their social circles, while learning how to use community resources. These weekly activities typically occur on Tuesday evenings and include a variety of events such as movies, live theater performances, nature hikes, concerts, dinner, dances, special events, canoeing, horseback riding, mini-retreats and exercise classes. The program is designed to assist adults in developing self-efficacy, leisure skills, independence, and interpersonal relationships.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Included in the monthly calendars are the activity descriptions and registration forms for a variety of special programs and events. These programs and events include the following:

Fitness Fun is a 3-6 weeks program to keep teens and adults healthy and active. The program takes place in the fall and again in the spring. The program is designed to teach participants how to exercise and that exercise can be fun! Activities may include water aerobics, hiking, yoga, kick boxing, and aerobics. Each activity also includes a clinic on health topics relating to nutrition, stretching, exercising, hydration, safety, and healthy eating. This program combined with the Snow Adventures Program allows participants to stay active year round.

Snow Adventures takes place during the winter in January and February. This is a 6 week program with a variety of activities including snowshoeing, sledge hockey, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, nature tours, and more.  Activities typically occur on Saturday mornings.

Art Expressions, available during January, is a great way to stay involved in recreation during the winter months. The program teaches a variety of art techniques and allows participants to express themselves. Camp K brings Professional artists in to teach a variety of techniques varying from music and movement to oil painting and pastels.

Horseback Riding takes place in the fall and spring, when participants can “saddle up” for a 3-6 week adventure designed to build confidence, develop horseback riding skills, increase respect for animals, and develop better dexterity and balance. Each participant learns important skills and knowledge about horses, including grooming, saddling, cleaning out their feet, mounting and dismounting, and gaining control of the horse while mounted and while leading a horse from the ground.

Time to Dance! This is a new 3 week dance program at Camp K. Instructors will be teaching a variety of dance forms. Currently, participants are learning Salsa. This program is specifically designed to promote fitness, improve coordination, increase self esteem, and develop dance and social skills.

Drama Club is a 6 week program available in the Spring. The program allows participants to expand imagination and creativity, increase awareness of self and talents, and develop acting skills. Participants spend five weeks making scenery and costumes, memorizing lines, and learning their part in a classic fairy tale. The production is then performed for family and friends.

Bowling League is a 6 week program for teens and adults sponsored by Olympus Hills Bowl, 4015 S. Wasatch Blvd. This program is designed to improve your bowling score, learn new bowling skills, meet new friends, have lots of fun, and continue to hunt for that elusive turkey. This program typically runs every Wednesday evening, periodically throughout the whole year. So come spent time with your favorite friends and knock down those pesky pins.

Mini Camps are an adventure where teen and adult participants can stay the night from a Friday to Saturday in our heated, bunk style cabins. Mini camps happen once a month and include a variety of activities such as holiday celebrations, musical guest, bowling, movies, games, crafts, horseback rides, snow days, and more. Dinner and Breakfast are provided.

SIBSHOPS

Sibshops are created for siblings of children with special needs. It provides an opportunity for brothers and sisters of children with special needs to obtain support from other children who are in similar situations. Sibshops also create an atmosphere of fun with a variety of activities to enjoy. Sibshops acknowledge being a brother or sister of a person with disabilities is sometimes challenging but has many immeasurable rewards.  These workshops are offered quarterly and are designed for children ages 8-12.

Teenshops are very similar to Sibshops, but were created for the teenage siblings of children with special needs. Some goals of these programs are to provide brothers and sisters with opportunities to discuss common joys and concerns with other siblings of children with special needs and to provide an opportunity to learn more about the implications of their sibling’s special needs.

Community Based Monthly Calendars

For Teen Quest and Adult Social Club a calendar is sent out each month with the upcoming activities. The participants can choose any number of activities they would like to attend. The participants then return the sign-up sheet and payment to Camp K. Transportation and supervision are provided by the Camp K staff. Participants are picked up at a number of specified locations in the Salt Lake Valley and dropped off at their homes after the activity. Transportation is provided to those who live within a reasonable driving distance from Camp K. If you live further call to see if driving arrangements can be made.

 

New Participants - If you are interested in attending the programs please contact Program Staff to complete the Participant Information Sheet and set up a short interview. Once this is complete you will be added to our database, allowing us to send you our monthly calendars.
