Opening a World of Opportunities for People With Disabilities

Wasatch Wheelchair Rally

   JULY 10TH, 2010 10:00 AM TO 4:00 PM

             WALK  -  RUN  -  WHEEL  -  WATCH

                                    LIBERTY PARK

700 EAST 900 SOUTH, SALT LAKE CITY, UT

Not exactly your typical fundraiser—the Wasatch Wheelchair Rally showcases runners and walkers pushing empty wheelchairs in a race around Liberty Park. Pushing a wheelchair helps remind us of the challenges faced every day by people confined to a wheelchair by a disability. The Kostopulos Dream Foundation will be joined by The Eagle 101.5 FM, the TRAILS Hand Cycling Team, the Wheelin’ Jazz Wheelchair Basketball Team, players from the Haggis and Scorpions Quad-Rugby Teams, the University of Utah Wheelchair Tennis Team, Ms. Wheelchair Utah, and many others to present a unique, fun event that raises awareness for the underserved special needs population and for the wonderful recreational and sports programs that improve health, reduce physical limitations, increase self-esteem and independence, and make lives better! Proceeds will go toward continuing and improving the recreational programs offered to individuals with disabilities of all ages (regardless of their ability to pay) at Camp Kostopulos, a 25-acre year-round recreation facility located just minutes from Salt Lake City in Emigration Canyon.

WHEELERS

We refer to our participants as “wheelers” because, no matter if you decide to run or walk, each participant pushes a wheelchair through the course. This is what separates us from other run/walk events. Pushing a wheelchair helps to remind us that we are doing this for people who need wheelchairs or other mobility needs. Wheelers have the option to walk or run as an individual or as part of a team. We recommend participation as a relay team of 5 wheelers. Each wheeler receives a free T-shirt, gift bag, refreshments, and a chance to win great prizes.

                      RACES FOR WHEELERS

5K 5-MAN RELAY RACE This will be a 5-man relay race around Liberty Park where able-bodied runners or walkers push an empty wheelchair. The wheelchair will serve as the baton. Each leg of the race will be approximately 1K, for a total of approximately 5K. The registration fee for a 5-man team is $100. Each team member will receive an event t-shirt, a numbered bib, a gift bag and refreshments. Note: If your team can bring their own wheelchair, the registration fee will be reduced to $80.

DISABILITY SERVICES ORGANIZATIONS

We want this to be a friend raiser as well as a fundraiser. We are inviting our “sister” agencies that provide services of all sorts for people with special needs, to come set up a table for their organization, creating a wonderful opportunity for networking and outreach for the underserved special needs population. If your agency chooses to participate, we will include your agency’s logo in all the event promotional materials, such as t-shirts, banners, programs, etc., and we will put your logo and a link to your website up on our “thank you” page on our website. To take advantage of this free exposure, please email your organization logo (prefer jpeg format) and your website URL to mdroddy@campk.org. We are asking for $30 to cover our promotional expenses, and we also ask that you bring your own table, chairs, and canopy (if desired) if possible (we have some at Camp K, but we want to avoid having to rent equipment). If you need an electrical hookup, please specify. Whether or not you choose to participate, you can still contribute.

To make this event a success, we need help spreading the word. Here’s what you can do to help:

1) Please share the information with anyone you think might be interested in sponsoring, participating in, or attending the event. Forward the information or the links. With this being the inaugural year, getting the word out to the people who can benefit the most is of paramount importance, so please let your participants know about it. I have added a PS with links to the website and Facebook page for the event. If you can, please add a similar block to your email signature. If you have a Facebook page, please go to the WWR page and “like” the page, also “suggest to friends”, and you can even create a link to your own page. The great thing about the Facebook page, is that everyone who “likes” it or has a link to it, will have the information show up on their own page also, so that everyone that looks at their page will see our info too. The link for our website will take you right to all the information, downloads, and online registration for the event. You can download high quality copies of the stuff I attached, plus the vendor application and the flyer. Racers can register online (both individuals and teams). You can also see our who our sponsors, vendors, and other participating agencies are (most have links to their websites). We are adding these links as we get them.

2) If possible, put up posters at work, or anywhere that you can think of that people will see them. I have some good quality posters printed if you don’t have access to a printer that will do 11 X 17 pages. You can also hand out flyers (I have some printed). Also, encourage coworkers, neighbors, friends, and family to field relay teams.

3) If you have suggestions for potential sponsors, vendors, or guest agencies that you want me to mail promotional materials to, please send me names/addresses and I will take care of it.
